ITV News films playtime at St Dominic’s School
Here at St Dominic’s School the role of play is important, and it is a firmly established part of the weekly timetable, supporting mental health and wellbeing and providing students with the opportunity to learn in many ways.
Last week, we had the pleasure of welcoming a film crew from ITV Meridian News to the school, who were very interested in finding out more about play at St Dominic’s.
Students were excited to be part of the filming which took place both in the classroom as well as outside in the playground and in our wonderful Forest School area. Some of our students were interviewed and shared what they look forward to at breaktime including playing tag and reading. They also talked about the reasons why playtime is important to them such as how a movement break gives them an energy boost when needed.
After showing a mix of students having fun outside skipping and playing games, as well as students enjoying classroom-based play at the water table and using the light box activity set, filming moved to interview Vicky Perry, Principal.
Mrs Perry explained the role of play at the school and how playtime may be a break from the classroom, but not a break from learning as it helps students to explore and take safe risks which they can apply to learning in other situations. Mrs Perry also highlighted how teachers are trained to be playful and support students with their play.
As part of the broadcast, ITV news also showcased the new policy report from Alliance 4 Children, ‘The Power 2 Play – Building a Creative Britain’, launched in Parliament on 23 June. The report highlights how play is essential for children’s creativity, mental health and future skills, but warns it is being increasingly eroded by phones, tablets and online time.
