Charlie’s Promise

Today, we welcomed Martin Cosser, CEO of Charlie’s Promise, to speak with pupils in Year 8 and above about knife crime, personal safety and the real-life consequences of unsafe choices.

The talk was hugely powerful. Martin shared his experience as a father who lost his son, Charlie, to knife crime. Many pupils – and staff – found the session deeply moving, and for some it may also have felt upsetting. That response is entirely understandable. The subject matter is serious and challenging.

It was, in many ways, one of the proudest moments for us as a school. Our chapel was full, with pupils from Year 8 through to Sixth Form gathered together. Throughout the session, pupils were respectful and reverent, even at the most emotional points. They showed genuine empathy and quiet support for one another, recognising the weight of what was being shared. Martin himself commented on the sensitivity and compassion shown by our young people, recognising them as a thoughtful and reflective audience.

Martin urged pupils to make two clear promises as a result of the talk: first, that they would never carry a knife; and second, that if they knew someone who was carrying a knife, they would report this anonymously via Fearless, part of Crimestoppers. His message was direct — that choosing not to carry a knife, and having the courage to speak up, saves lives.

As a school, we believe it is necessary for young people to be educated about important safeguarding issues in an honest, age-appropriate and carefully managed way. Our responsibility is not only to provide academic learning, but also to equip pupils with the knowledge and judgement they need to keep themselves safe in the wider world. This session forms part of our wider safeguarding curriculum, and key themes will be revisited in needs-led lessons to ensure pupils have appropriate space to reflect, ask questions and deepen their understanding.

Our safeguarding and pastoral teams remain available should any pupil wish to talk further. If any family has concerns about the subject matter or feels their child may need additional support following the session, please do get in touch so that we can work with you to provide appropriate support in school.

Thank you for your continued support as we work together to promote the safety and wellbeing of all our young people.
