Speech & Language Therapy

On admission, pupils and students are fully assessed for verbal comprehension and listening skills, expressive language, vocabulary and semantic skills, high level language ability, and social interaction skills.

Pupils work on different aspects of social communication across the curriculum. The school has developed a Social Communication Programme which supports this area and this is used across all areas of the waking day curriculum.  Therapists provide individual therapy sessions where specified in the statement of special educational needs. All students receive therapy support across those subjects with a high level of language input, such as English, Maths and Humanities. Therapy targets are set that relate to pupils statemented objectives.

Interventions are planned and delivered in response to pupil need and this include pre-teaching vocabulary and anxiety management groups. Close liaison with teaching staff ensures that therapy targets the areas that may otherwise provide barriers to learning.

In Year 10, pupils participate in the English Speaking Board ‘Certificate of Oral Proficiency’ examination, which is delivered collaboratively by the Therapists and the English department.

Sixth Form students receive Speech and Language Therapy to support their post-sixteen learning for life, both individually when required and through our bespoke Sixth Form Independence Programme.
